William James Nicol passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2007 in St. Michael’s
Health centre at the age of 95.
Bill was born November 26, 1911 near Kipp, Alberta. He was raised in Kipp on a family farm. He received his grade schooling at Rolling Hills and later attended both Vermillion and Olds College graduating in 1933.
As a youth he was a member of the Lethbridge 4-H Beef Club and the Lethbridge and District Dairy Club. Bill continued to support the Dairy Club during his active farming career serving in leadership for 25 years. He worked on the family farm as well as the Thom Dairy.
Bill married Elizabeth Rae on April 27, 1940 and shortly thereafter took over the Nicol family farm. He was a member of the Lethbridge Milk Produces from 1941 to 1970 holding several positions and a member of the Lethbridge Milk Foundation from 1962-73. The couple farmed together a Kipp for 31 years before moving to Lethbridge in 1971. In 1995 Bill received the Provincial Dairy Award for excellence in recognition of his life-long contributions to the dairy industry.
Bill was a member of First united Church, the Green Acres Kiwanis, the Diamond City Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star. Bill’s love was for his family, farm and community.
Bill is survived by two sons William (Louise) for Fairview, Texas, and Ken (Linda) of Coalhurst and Betty Nicol of Lethbridge as well as seven grandchildren Darren (Pam), Byron (Liz), Blair (Brandy), Cregg (Sharla), Suzanne (Dave), Tamara, and Carlin. Bill is also survived by 15 great grandchildren, one half brother Alex Nicol of Vancouver, and many nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth in 1989, son Russell in 2000 and granddaughter Shannon in 2003. Bill was also predeceased by his parents, two brother’s James and Charles Nicol, two sisters Mary Clifton and Sarah Clark and brothers-in-law Russ Clifton, Bill, Jim, John and Tom Rae, sisters-in-law Elsie, Mabel, Mary & Mercy Rae and Barbara Nicol.
