Microsoft Office 2007/Vista File Compatibility Issue
-
Note, if you are an Office Word 2003/XP user and need to open an Office Word 2007/Vista document you can call IT and we will help you update your computer with the needed file converter.
-
It has come to our attention that some users are having difficulties with files that have been created in Office 2007 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), on their personal PC’s. Unfortunately, files created in the latest version of Office are not directly compatible with older versions, since a new file system has been implemented. You can see the difference by looking at the file extension at the end of the file name. (.docx .xlsx and .pptx in Office 2007, as opposed to .doc .xls and .ppt in Office 2003).
To alleviate the existing compatibility issues, Olds College IT suggests:
OFFICE 2007 USERS
- Faculty and students who use Office 2007 should remember to save to the Office 2003 format when saving their documents. This will ensure that others on campus who are using Office 2003 will be able to open their files. In all Office 2007 applications, select the Office Button in the upper left corner, select “save as”, select “97-2003” option.
- You can set your Office applications to automatically save in this format. Select the “Options” button at the bottom of the same menu. Select the “Save” category, Under Save files in this format, click on the drop down arrow and select “97-2003”
