A Chair of Energy Industry
Studies is a senior position at Olds College, funded externally
by the Energy Industry Partnership.
This dynamic leader will raise the level of professional practice in Alberta’s land agent industry by developing advanced curriculum, facilitating communication with industry, and building trusting relationships with the public.
Based in Calgary, the successful nominee will deploy their extensive experience, business relationships, and insight to lead intellectual investment in the land agent industry.
The position is paid, though secondments from industry are also welcome.
This may be an ideal opportunity for a senior land agent or recent retiree to ensure future generations of land agents are prepared to meet the needs of the industry and the province. The Chair will serve as a catalyst for growth in the depth and quality of surface land agent training in Alberta.
Energy Industry Chair Characteristics
- Strong relationships with industry, including regulatory industries
- Success at a senior level within the energy sector that has led to an extensive industry network
- Proven negotiation skills
- Familiarity and experience with the issues, priorities and values among Alberta's aboriginal communities
Energy Industry Chair Responsibilities
The primary responsibility is in providing visionary leadership to Olds College’s Land Agent program in order to assist alignment of college programming with the human resource needs of the Energy sector.
Reporting to the Vice President, Academic Services through one of the Academic School Chairs, this Energy Industry Chair is charged with
- Assessment and development of high value and highly sought-after training programs and tools
- Establishment of relationships and partnerships leading to increased training opportunities and capacity
- Identification of industry stakeholders' business goals which could best be supported through customized short courses and performance benchmarking.
- Supporting industry in identification of training and certification needs
- Working with industry and the College's Industry Advisory Committee to provide input that ensures Olds College programming is relevant and current
- Assisting Olds College Office of Advancement in identification of new resources and supports for the program's growth and sustainability
- Working with industry stakeholders to help create a skill development strategy for the industry
- Liaising directly with industry associations and regulatory agencies in identifying emerging industry issues
- Promotion of Olds College programming to industry and potential students
- Attraction of human and physical resources required in the development of “National Class Programming”
- Assessment of programming outcomes through the performance of alumni in the workplace

A fund created through The Energy Industry Partnership will serve the needs of the Energy Industry Chair for a period of 10 years. It is anticipated that the Chair will be a rotating position with two to four different individuals occupying the position over the 10 years.
