Environmental Field Study Hikes
Learn while you enjoy the scenery!
This two-course series will begin Friday evening, with an introduction to some basic concepts about ecology and the environment. Saturday and Sunday will be spent hiking and looking at plant identification, plant and animal adaptations to different environments, population interactions, community relationships, and ecosystem dynamics. The selection of trails will depend upon conditions at the time, but will involve enough elevation gain to reach alpine meadows, so moderate physical fitness is a requirement. Potential trails in the Kananaskis area include Galatea Lakes and the Centennial Trail that goes to the top of Mt. Allen and in the Lake Louise area, the trail to Eiffel Lake and the trail to the top of Fairview Peak. Saturday evening discussions will focus on specific environmental issues such as the importance of maintaining biodiversity and problems associated with this. Accommodation will be at local area hostels and fees will include all meals and accommodation costs.
