Spring 2011
This series of seminars is for those who are new to this technology or those who use it in their workplace on a daily basis. You can choose to enroll in all the seminars or enroll in any combination of seminars.

BASIC HANDHELD GPS
Introductory course for those wishing to use GPS for business or recreational purposes.
- discuss the basic GPS components and principles
- use GPS to navigate to given locations
- use GPS to collect field positions to be used for a map
- transfer data between a GPS receiver and a computer
- produce a map using GPS data collected in the field
- add an air photo background to a GPS map
BASIC PROFESSIONAL GPS
Introductory course for those wishing to use professional GPS for mapping purposes.
- Discuss the basic GPS components, principles and performance
- Perform basic GPS receiver setup and configuration
- Create a data dictionary
- Use GPS to collect field positions and attributes suitable for a GIS
- Transfer data between a GPS receiver and a computer
- Produce a map by processing GPS data in the Trimble Office application
- Increase accuracy using differential correction by post processing
- Export GPS data for use in applications such as AutoCAD and ArcGIS
USING GEOSPATIAL DATA IN AUTOCAD
Introduction to AutoCAD so that you can create basic objects, and use existing CAD data. Different data types including spatial data (vector and raster) and attribute data will be discussed along with examples and their applications.
At the end of this seminar, you will be able to:
- create and edit basic CAD objects
- insert and scale an air photo
- insert and scale scanned data
- overlay a survey plan
- add GPS data to a plan
- work with georeferenced data
- Hyperlink pictures of a site
INTRODUCTION TO ESRI ARCVIEW 9.3
Introductory course designed to give you hands-on experience in the use of ESRI’s ArcGIS 9.3 desktop GIS software and selected types of data that are used for GIS. You will become familiar with the basic spatial data loading, manipulation and map making capabilities of this industry standard software.
For Day 1 - Participants will:
- discover basic GIS concepts and principles
- learn the basics of ArcCatalog for managing and previewing geographic data
- acquire an overview of ArcGIS Projects, Data Frames and Layers
- perform queries to find information from a GIS
- Create Simple Maps
For Day 2 - Participants will:
- Perform advanced GIS layer symbolization and display in ArcMap
- Use ArcToolbox to re-project source data
- Peform advanced GIS query and analysis operations
- Create, export and print map layouts in ArcMap
