
Utility Tree Worker Safety Training
for the Industrial Vegetation Management Association of Alberta (IVMAA)
This program, offered at Olds College for the Industrial Vegetation Management Association of Alberta (IVMAA) is for individuals working in the clearing of brush and trimming of trees around powerlines.
The program provides safety and technical training in all aspects of the work:
- electrical safety,
- fire prevention,
- and all methods of
clearing and trimming.
The purpose of the IVMAA’s training and certification program is to ensure workers are trained to work safely in all aspects of their work, including around electrical conductors.
This course is one of the components required to apply for certification as a Utility Tree Worker or Utility Tree Trimmer in Alberta.
Registration opens mid- November 2012 (2013 course dates are to be determined), however first priority will be given to IVMAA members. Fees are due at time of registration.
Course Prerequisite
You must have six months of related work experience in tree and brush work around powerlines.

- STEP 2 Complete the Registration Form and have some
form of payment ready. - STEP 3 Fill in the Confirmation of Work Experience information
- STEP 4 Have your employer review the Student Supplies Checklist. It must be checked off and signed by your employer in acknowledgement that they must send employees prepared for the course. Read panel #3 on the brochure closely (pdf link below). If they do not, students who come with inadequate gear will be sent home without refund.

Utility Tree Worker and Utility Tree Trimmer Recertification Course
The Industrial Vegetation Management Association of Alberta, in association with the Work & Safety Standards Division of Alberta Labour requires certified Utility Tree Trimmers and Utility Tree Workers to complete a recertification course within five years after obtaining their initial certification and every five years thereafter. You will be updated on current electrical safety standards and safety practices important to you on the job.
Register in this course if your IVMAA certificate expires in 2013!
At the conclusion of this course, the student will be up to date with the
latest
Electrical and Communication Utility Systems Regulations respecting Utility
Tree Workers and Utility Tree Trimmers and be able to:
- identify acceptable safe work practices and routines while working
around energized powerlines and equipment - request line outages and equipment blocking
- correctly identify limits of approach for all voltage levels and demonstrate these safe clearance distances
- properly maintain tools and equipment used to perform work around energized powerlines and equipment
Course Prerequisite
Previous Utility Tree Worker or Utility Tree Trimmer Certificate.
Certification Qualifications
After successful completion of this course students can apply for recertification if they meet the following criteria:
Utility Tree Worker Recertification
- Current employment within the industry as a Utility Tree Worker
Utility Tree Trimmer Recertification
- Current employment within the industry as a Utility Tree Trimmer
