Being a retail manager, I am responsible for coaching, training and developing my staff, dealing with customers, and upholding all the company's policies and procedures (i.e. visual standards, staff styling, and asset protection). Also, I am a key driver for the business's goals. I will also oversee and respond to the organization's day-to-day needs.
Taking the 9 months out of my life to do the Olds College Fashion Marketing Certificate program was one of the best decisions I have made in my life to date. It provided me with the opportunities to channel my love for the creative arts like fashion and events into a potential career. I learned many aspects of fashion from styling, to visual merchandising, event management, business marketing, garment analysis and retail management. All the classes combined have propelled me ahead in my field and have allowed me to become a better retail manager and definitely a more creative fashionista. The instructors in the program love what they do, and it shows everyday!
I would recommend the program for those who are interested in realizing their passion for fashion become a full-time job or those who just want to find where they should land their feet in the industry.

"I graduated from the Fashion Marketing Program at Olds College. I enjoyed all of my classes but Visual Display was my favourite. I am currently working as the lead of the Visual Department for a Sears department store. The work is fun, fast-paced and sometimes challenging. The courses at Olds College gave me a good foundation in the business and were a big help in securing this employment. Olds College holds an Industry day every spring and you have the opportunity to meet valuable contacts for job hunting. "My career at Sears is very exciting and rewarding as essentially I run my own business within the store. The Modern Shop is a fashion-forward boutique where we sell our own brands Attitude Jay Manuel and Nevada, plus national brand clothing.
I work with the merchandising team, manage and execute the sales and promotions in the shop. It's challenging to be in charge of building your own business and manage a team of associates who are passionate about fashion!
Olds College Fashion Marketing Certificate Program gave me the tools to succeed in this role. Having a good understanding of Retail Management, Visual Merchandising and Garment Analysis is only part of the job. Everyday I use some element of all the courses I took in the fashion program. "I have my Dream Job, because of my Olds College education. I’m working as a buyer for Blu’s Womenswear, and in February, I’m heading to New York to buy for the Fall collection. When I first graduated, I worked as an Assistant Manager for Jacob. A year later, I was promoted to Manager, a position I held for three years. I really credit Olds College for my success. With this program as my foundation, I started right out of the gate in management."
