What can you expect from the program/course?
This stand alone online program is designed as a cohesive overview of the theory and applications that relate to the slaughter of all species that are processed in Canada. The program is a great asset to new and experienced professionals in the industry to keep up with increasing humane slaughter continuing education requirements.
Length of Program: Each course can be taken over a 3 month span to fit in with your professional life.
Dates: Classes are offered four times per year: January, April, July, and October.
Fees: $499/person (with advance registration or full program registration)
Group Rates: (20 or more participants enrolled in the full Program at the same time) are available on request.

This program consists of 6 individual courses that are designed to be taken as a whole package to give a wide overview and comprehensive understanding of humane slaughter practices in Canada. Each course can be taken over a 3 month time span to fit in with your busy professional life. Since this is a completely stand alone, online delivery, it is a cost effective training that will help decrease travel costs involved with traditional centralized training.
On successful completion you will be able to; define the term "Animal Welfare", describe the origins and development of animal welfare, list the five freedoms, state when slaughterhouses were first regulated, and explain the purpose of quality assurance.

On successful completion you will be able to; state why bleeding causes the death of an animal, identify the major blood vessels and their function, explain the differences between species that affect the rate of death, explain why the time between stunning and bleeding is important, give examples of factors that affect stun to bleed time, and state legal considerations concerning animal welfare during bleeding.

On successful completion you will be able to; describe how an effective stun is achieved, list the differences in action between penetrating and non-penetrating equipment, and define the term kinetic energy and its relevance to mechanical stunning methods.

On successful completion you will be able to; identify the key behaviour traits of animals, describe the senses of sight, hearing and smell in animals, and describe what is mean by the "field of vision".

This module covers the assessment of animals for their fitness and the assessment of an animal’s basic needs - including food, water, space, segregation and thermal comfort. A section also looks at how barns can be designed to allow for efficient movement of animals.

This module covers the following elements as they relate specifically to the humane handling and slaughter of poultry; the barn environment, handling & restraint, stunning & killing, and bleeding.
