Visit the Gardens

Welcome!

The Botanic Gardens and Treatment Wetlands at Olds College truly offer something for everyone regardless of the season.  In spring you’ll be treated to flowering trees and shrubs, early blooming perennials, swaths of spring bulbs and the sound of water starting to move through the constructed wetlands.  Summer brings fabulous displays of annuals in select beds, and in containers strategically placed throughout the gardens.  The Herb Garden and AAS Selection Display Gardens reach their peak with edible plants, and of course summer perennials are hitting their stride, including the aquatic species found populating the wetland ponds.  Fall places the emphasis on ornamental grasses, and the fall foliage colour offered by dogwood, mountain ash and saskatoons, not to mention the sight of larch trees whose needles turn a golden yellow before falling to the ground.  Winter interest can be found in the bark colour of many trees and shrubs, the evergreen foliage of conifers, and the seed heads of perennials that continue to stand through the snow over winter.

Plant labels identify plant material and enhance your visit. Learn more about the Olds College Botanic Gardens plant labels, and how to read a plant label.  We are also in the process of implementing a QR-code based plant information system.  See our page on HisTREE to learn more.

If you are visiting the Wetlands, especially with an organized group, there are a few hazards to be aware of.  Please view our Visitor Orientation document to learn more or contact the Botanic Gardens Manager at 403-556-8323.

The Botanic Gardens are definitely wonderful, but the entire Olds College Campus is worth a visit. Take a tour today!

Grounds staff care for over 100 acres of annual, perennial, and shrub beds, sports fields, green space, patios and courtyards in the academic and living spaces that make up Olds College and Community Learning Campus.  Mowing lawns and sports fields, landscape construction, pruning trees and shrubs, planting spring bulbs, snow clearing and litter control are only a few of the undertakings involved in creating a functional living landscape.  Grounds staff work hard to provide visitors, students, and staff with an inviting, beautiful, safe, relaxing and educational outdoor space.  Each year they grow on average 12 000 annual plants which are planted across Olds College campus and CLC grounds.  Grounds staff continue to care for these plants throughout the growing season in their 25 annual beds, nearly 100 planters and 36 stunning hanging baskets.  Take a look around every corner (and above your head) on campus to find a wide variety of flowers and edible plants as well as some unique planters and lattices!  And if you’re lost, helpful grounds staff will point you in the right direction.  They have campus maps attached directly to all of their utility vehicles.

Whether you are a keen gardener looking for ideas, or simply seeking a pleasant place to stroll, the Olds College Campus and Botanical Gardens and Treatment Wetlands is a worthy destination.
