Location:  Olds, Alberta

The Continuing Education Department is seeking instructors to add to a roster for contract opportunities to instruct in the Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) Program as well as the Experienced Operator Safety Certification. The anticipated terms of employment for these contract opportunities will vary, and instructors will be contracted as opportunities arise. The responsibilities of the Heavy Equipment Operator Instructor include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintenance and updating of curriculum as required, development of lesson plans and scheduling of daily training;
  • Assisting in the development of training proposals and/or contracted deliveries;
  • Delivery of the HEO course over a 12-week period and/or short industry training sessions;
  • Setting up and coordinating on-site training locations, including provisions for facilities, equipment and supplies;
  • Development and marking of quizzes, assignments, and field evaluations as required;
  • Ensuring that on-site operations comply with Occupational Health and Safety Standards as well as all regulations pertaining to the heavy equipment industry;
  • Ensuring complete and up-to-date records of student performance and course attendance;
  • Identifying and troubleshooting equipment repairs, maintaining repair and maintenance records, and coordinating regular equipment maintenance;
  • Providing regular feedback, and reports as requested, to the Trades’ Programmer, attend meetings as requested.

A minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience in the Heavy Equipment Operator trade is required. The successful candidate will have extensive experience operating and maintaining a wide variety of heavy equipment (loaders, graders, dozers, packers, excavators, rock trucks, and skid-steers). Preference will be given to candidates who possess a minimum of a class 3 operator’s license. Strong interpersonal and time management skills and organizational abilities are vital. Solid computer skills are required, (Google Applications experience is an asset). Experience instructing at the post-secondary level and/or experience as a trainer in the heavy equipment operator field would be an asset. Successful candidates will possess the ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
