The Olds College Smart Farm(OCSF) Manager is responsible for planning, operating and managing the ag production activities on the 930 hectare, fully commercial, mixed crops and livestock enterprise that is OCSF. The Manager will implement and use leading edge farm production technologies and will make use of sensors, devices, controls, monitors, and software to gather data that will inform decision making within the farm entity with a focus on profitability, productivity, and sustainability.

Key job functions include but are not limited to:

  • Utilize Smart Ag technologies and data available to inform crop planning, livestock planning and operational decision making
  • Evaluate and hire companies for agronomy advice, seeding, spraying, harvesting, haying, and silaging of corn and barley when required.
  • Create an annual breeding plan and implement a feeding and grazing management plan that incorporates sustainable agricultural practices
  • Determine crops and livestock teaching, learning, and applied research requirements and organize equipment, supplies, animals and cropping activities by adhering to schedules for student labs and projects on OCSF.

The ideal candidate for this role will possess a Degree or a Diploma in Ag Production, Science or Ag Management or related credentials with five or more years experience in managing a progressive mixed farming operation with a focus on the use of leading agricultural technologies. The ability to communicate farm concepts effectively both verbally and in writing as well as possessing the ability to work collaboratively and in team situations. The demonstrated ability for critical thinking skills, supervision and relationship building skills as well as being a highly motivated self-starter.
