Location: Olds, Alberta

Olds College is seeking a permanent full-time Research Project Manager. This position manages and supports the execution of high profile projects and activities within the Olds College Centre for Innovation by integrating the disciplines of engineering, agronomy, data acquisition, analytics, project management, and information processing. This key position will help the College and its partners develop, validate and demonstrate leading edge agricultural technologies to improve the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of the agriculture and agri-food industry. 

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage the day to day implementation and effective operation of specific Smart Agriculture research projects, demonstrations and activities to meet obligations to funding agencies, clients, and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead a team of scientists, technicians, operators, farm staff, and subject matter experts in the successful execution of projects, including definition of roles and responsibilities and optimal communication channels
  • Manage personnel (technicians and students) involved in Smart Agriculture research projects and activities including assignment of tasks, providing feedback, and staff performance reviews.
  • Work with the project team to define data collection protocols, collect data and observations, analyze and interpret results, compile reports, and identify opportunities for future work.
  • Deploy project management principles and tools to effectively manage project scope, schedule, and budget while ensuring internal and external expectations are managed and met.
  • Liaise between researchers, faculty, subject matter experts, and farm operators to optimize collaboration and cooperation with existing college enterprises.
  • Provide input on future direction of Smart Agriculture applied research, including technologies or practices to consider, industry partnerships to pursue, and potential opportunities for collaboration

The successful candidate will have a post-graduate degree in engineering or agriculture or related field. Designation as a professional agrologist or professional engineer, or evidence of eligibility within one year of employment, is a necessity. A minimum of ten (10) years of management experience in the agriculture sector, with project management professional (PMP) designation is considered an asset. Practical on-farm experience and strong understanding of Western Canadian crop production and a strong working knowledge of precision and digital agriculture technologies, concepts, and practices is a necessity. The successful candidate will be passionate about the use of technology to improve the productivity and sustainability of Canadian Agriculture.
