PROVIDING THE EDUCATION AND TOOLS TO SUCCEED.
At Olds College, our goal is to provide our students with an entrepreneurial mindset and attitude that will serve them well, whether they go on to be an employee or start their own business. When we refer to entrepreneurship, we mean it in the broadest sense: the ability to see an opportunity and pull together the resources and people needed to make it happen.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS A WAY OF THINKING.
All students who intend to graduate with a certificate (longer than 16 weeks), a diploma, or applied degree will complete Spirit of Entrepreneurship – a gamified entrepreneurship iPad app – as part of a graduation requirement.
Spirit of Entrepreneurship is the first comprehensive course delivered on an iPad app with a gamified business simulation. Students learn to start and run their own lemonade stand empire in a social and mobile environment. This course offers students the opportunity to learn and apply entrepreneurship concepts by participating in a fun, dynamic and digital learning environment.
The gamified entrepreneurship course app starts out simply: students buy and sell lemonade stand inventory to the citizens of The Blands. Mini-games and awards encourage students to move through 12 modules of comprehensive content. As they progress through the content, more activities are unlocked in the game. As students become more skilled, they are able to run their stands more effectively and, hopefully, more profitably. Students are required to assess their business environment, make financial decisions, and apply marketing strategies within the game itself. They are also able to review slide notes and interact with each other, in real-time, right from the app.
Developed by GoForth Institute and Robots and Pencils, in partnership with Olds College, this project started with a few questions – what if we took relevant, real world, competency-based educational content, added elements of video gameplay and deployed an entire course of material on mobile devices? What would the experience look like for students? Would they be more engaged? Would they retain what they learned? Would they think school was fun? Would they want to learn more? We know the answer will be a resounding “yes”!
It takes about 22 hours to go through the course material but the amount of time spent playing the game will vary from person to person. On average, students spend 30 hours playing the game.
You need to complete 12 quizzes and achieve an average of 50% over all 12 quizzes. There is a quiz after each unit of content. You have 3 chances to complete each quiz and the app will select your best mark. After you have completed all 12 quizzes, the app will issue you a Certificate of Completion. Olds College automatically receives a notification when you have completed the app and you will be given a pass/fail mark on your Olds College transcript.
Yes you can use an iPad (version 2.0 or higher), an iPad mini, or an iPad Air.
Note - We do NOT support the original iPad (version 1.0).
If you are admitted and registered at Olds College, the app is free.
If you plan to graduate from a certificate program at Olds College that is longer than 16 weeks, or achieve a diploma or applied degree, you will be required to complete the entrepreneurship app. There are some exceptions. For example, students in Master Spinner, Open Studies, the Post-Diploma Certificate, and the Transitional/Vocational certificate programs do not have to complete the entrepreneurship app. You have until the end of your program to complete the app.
You can certainly complete the entrepreneurship app even if it is not a requirement for you to graduate. Please contact one of your instructors to get access to the app.
No – if you successfully completed the Discover Entrepreneurship iPad course in high school through the Alberta Distance Learning Centre or another high school or college, you do not have to complete the entrepreneurship app at Olds College. You will have to provide confirmation of successful completion of the course to the Registrar’s Office.
Students can continue to access and use the Spirit of Entrepreneurship app for 5 years. The Olds College licensing agreement allows students to continue to get updates and support for 5 years.
No – it is simply a requirement of graduation and does not have any credits per se attached to completion. However, instructors have the ability to use the app as a tool within a course. If you register for a course where the app is part of the curriculum, in this sense, you receive credit for completing it.
For example, our Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise Certificate uses the app.
