“We are excited to be a part of the redeveloped curriculum. Currently we employ Olds College students and are encouraged by the new changes. The biggest change is the time frame that students are now able to work on the course. There is a direct benefit to hands-on-learning education. We are a supporter of changes made by Olds College which will enable students to gain further knowledge allowing them to move onto careers such as superintendents and supervisors.”

Robin Sadler – Superintendent
Silvertip Golf Resort

Program Description

Olds College offers a one year certificate and a two year diploma in Turfgrass Management and a four year Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Golf Course Management. These options allow students to have greater flexibility with their busy lifestyles. Although this is a four year degree in Golf Course Management, there are several exit points allowing students to take as much, or as little education as they desire. There is an exit point after two years giving the student a diploma in Turfgrass Management or after the first year where the student will gain a certificate in Turfgrass Management.

Turfgrass Management Timeline

Turfgrass Management Timeline

How it works!

Students will be on campus from January to May and will be studying one subject at a time in a 3 week schedule that allows for a deeper integration of each subject. In May, students will go back into the industry where they will participate in a minimum six month field school/internship. This is where the program will really separate itself from traditional educational offerings. Students will be paid employees, in the industry, performing duties at the golf course while also completing courses. While enrolled in the field school/internship, the students will be working in collaborative groups with their fellow students and will draw on the experience and knowledge of many of the golf course superintendents to complete their course work. There will be immense value to both students and industry with this new learning model.
