Since 1999, Olds College has played a leadership role in applied research activity aimed at advancing innovation-based rural economic development in Alberta. The mandate of Olds College Centre for Innovation (OCCI) is to enhance innovation in the agriculture, horticulture, land and environmental management sectors through market-focused applied research and the development of enabling processes and new products.
Our commitment has resulted in a profound impact on the ability for hundreds of small and medium sized companies in the agriculture sector to explore new ideas, test innovative products and processes and incubate technologies prior to full commercialization. Located one hour north of Calgary in Olds, Alberta, OCCI offers entrepreneurs access to expertise, equipment, unique facilities and funding leverage. Within OCCI, there are four unique research areas that demonstrate excellence, as measured by the connection to student learning, industry partnerships, government investment and the unique facilities and expertise we offer. Our agriculture focus includes agronomy, livestock and food research, utilizing the College Farm, greenhouses, field plots, Composting Centre, analytical laboratories, Brewery and National Meat Training Centre. Research on sustainable turfgrass management is the led by the Prairie Turfgrass Research Centre. Water quality and wetlands research is conducted in the unique cold climate constructed wetlands that spans 12 acres on our campus. Apparel technology research is the focus in our new Apparel Innovation Centre located in Calgary, Alberta. Our Bioindustry Resource Centre is an incubator that is ready for testing and demonstration of new technologies and processes.
The Olds College Centre for Innovation (OCCI) is the centre of applied research at Olds College. Since its establishment in 1999, OCCI’s main goal has been to implement applied research projects and to develop research-related relationships and partnerships.
OCCI aims to share the impact of our work within our community. Dissemination of knowledge is achieved through various avenues including facility tours, workshops, publications and newsletters. Media inquiries or tour requests can be directed by email email@example.com or 403-507-7970.
Our commitment has resulted in a profound impact on the ability for hundreds of small and medium sized companies in the agriculture sector to explore new ideas, test innovative products and processes and incubate technologies prior to full commercialization. This is proven through our recognition in the ‘Top 50 Research Colleges in Canada’ list and the fact that we placed ‘Number 1’ in Canada for partnerships. OCCI collaborates on applied research projects with numerous government agencies, Campus Alberta members, and institutions across Canada and around the world. Research supports and informs the curriculum through exposing learners to the most innovative and up-to-date information available in a variety of disciplines.
The applied research activities at OCCI have led to huge successes for industry, but also for Olds College faculty and students, who have had a unique opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in their field of expertise. Students are exposed to research opportunities through year round employment as student research assistants. Faculty are contracted directly to provide expertise on a project, or play a mentorship role for student researchers.
"Horizons" is an Olds College community magazine about the campus and student/faculty involvement with OCCI.
