Innovation and entrepreneurship are attributes that Olds College and Red Deer College both hold in high regard. The two post-secondary organizations are working in partnership on a new training program for students and recent graduates. The program, Start Up Saturdays Central Alberta, will encourage young entrepreneurs to create a start-up company, and offer training through a series of five workshops that will help participants learn how to get their business out of the “idea” phase and into becoming an actual business.

Each workshop will include expertise from an expert, and in between workshops students will be asked to take what they have learned and apply it to their startup over the next week. Workshop topics will include:

January 6 - Ideation

Startup Saturdays Central Alberta wants all students and new grads to feel like they are welcome, whether they have a business idea or not. For this reason, our first workshop is ideation. Participants will be taught strategies for ideation, working on their strengths, and how to test a business idea. Over the next week students and new grads will be asked to use the skills they learned to generate startup ideas for the next weeks’ workshop.

January 13 - Idea Pitch and Business Model

Our second workshop will have the participants pitch their top business idea to the group. This gives the them the opportunity for feedback from mentors and the opportunity for collaboration. Participants can form business teams or work on their idea individually. The next part of the workshop will be around business models. Students will be taught some of the popular business models and customer discovery. Over the next week participants will be asked to work on their business model and do some customer discovery.

January 20 - Marketing and Branding

This workshop will give an overview of marketing and branding. Some of the topics will be what is your brand, and how you are going to market to your customers. Over the next week, students will be asked to work on their brand, and how will they market to their customers.

January 27 - Financials and  Pitch Training

In this workshop students will learn basic financial statements, how to talk to a banker and what they are looking for, as well as how to pitch their idea and what information should be presented at the pitch. They will work on a quick pitch and then pitch their startup to the rest of the group for feedback. Over the next week the participants will be asked to work on their pitch.

February 3 - Pitch Competition

At the final workshop participants will pitch their Startup for the opportunity to win $3,000. High potential startups will have the opportunity to travel to Calgary and participate in the Innovation Rodeo.
