Internships

An internship is a professional learning experience offered by an employer to give students meaningful exposure to the work environment. Internships assist with career development by providing opportunities to explore interests and develop professional skills and competencies related to a student’s field of study. Internships can vary in length, discipline and type of position.

Alberta Smithsonian Internship Program:

Spend 10-12 weeks in Washington D.C. at the Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest consortium of museums! Assist with research and help produce world-class programs and exhibits, learn from experts, make an impact, and develop personally and professionally. This internship offers placements in a variety of disciplines ranging from the sciences, business and public administration, history, to education and the arts. Successful applicants will receive a $10,000 scholarship (the internship is unpaid).

Eligibility:  

  • open to all OC students enrolled in a diploma or applied degree program
  • have completed at least 60 credits in a full-time academic program
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on all post-secondary work
  • have a minimum GPA of 3.2 in the most recently-completed term prior to application deadline
  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • be a resident of Alberta, defined for the purposes of these grant programs as any one of the following:
    • born in Alberta;
    • graduated from a high school in Alberta;
    • graduated from an Eligible Program at an Alberta post-secondary institution;
    • lived in Alberta for 12 consecutive months.

Alberta-Saxony Internship and Intercultural Alliance (ASiiA):

The ASiiA program is an opportunity for Albertan students to participate in an internship in Saxony, Germany in a research or industry placement directly associated with the student’s field of study. Relevant subject areas include, but are not limited to: technology, business, health, energy, environment, education and economic development. Some internships may be unpaid.

Eligibility:

  • open to all OC students enrolled in an Applied Degree program
  • have completed a minimum of 24 credits before departing for the internship
  • have a minimum GPA of 2.50
  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • proficiency in German language is desired, but not required
