For the love of learning and getting your hands dirty!

For more than 50 years gardeners have gathered at Olds College for this week that inspires and informs. Everyone from beginner to expert can learn something valuable, enjoy the company of fellow enthusiasts and experience the fun of summer camp all over again.

Hort Week features a number of speakers and instructors during its events.  Below are the biographies of this year's instructors:

Janet Melrose

Janet is ‘Calgary’s Cottage Gardener’, a growing micro-business specializing in garden consulting, coaching, education and Horticultural Therapy programs. Her motto is ‘Grow, Nurture, and Bloom’.  After a career in Calgary’s corporate world, Janet’s lifelong enthusiasm for gardening led her to complete the Prairie Horticultural Certificate (with Distinction) through Olds College, together with the Home Farm Horticultural Therapy Certificate.  Janet takes great satisfaction in sharing her knowledge and passion for horticulture, contributing to the community in positive and productive ways through workshops and various media including writing for The Gardener for the Prairies and Calgary Gardening as well as appearances on TV and radio.

Jane Reksten

Jane is the Manager, Botanic Gardens and Greenhouses at Olds College.  It was here as a student 16 years ago that she discovered a passion for plants and gardening.  Her interest in the artistic aspects of horticulture is complemented by a background in science gained from her BA at the University of Victoria in Microbiology and Environmental Studies.

After five years in the landscape maintenance industry she joined the Calgary Zoo and Botanical Gardens, first as Schoolyard Naturalization Project leader, and later as Botanical Education Coordinator and Manager of Continuing Education before returning to Olds College in 2011.   Jane is a regular writer and speaker on a wide variety of gardening of topics, allowing her to share her love of learning, and enthusiasm for all aspects of horticulture.

Cynthia Pohl

Cynthia Pohl is a Professional Journeyman Landscape Gardener and a Certified Green Roof Professional.  Living Lands Landscape and Design is an ecological landscaping company that has been designing and installing sustainable and organic landscape designs for over fifteen years.  Our focus is on creating landscapes that build biodiversity.
