T.U.R.F. Day 2017

Turf Under Research Field Day

On Thursday, August 24, 2017, the Prairie Turfgrass Research Centre hosted its biennial T.U.R.F. Day, a free event which provided outreach and education for anyone interested in the turfgrass industry. This year’s line-up included a walking tour of the PTRC’s research plots with scientists Katie Dodson and Laura Chaves, a barbeque lunch, and a tailgate tradeshow and equipment demos followed by educational sessions including sprayer calibration with Jason Pick, integrated pest management of turf and landscape pests with Dr. Ken Fry, and strategies for improving cold tolerance with Dr. Darrell Tompkins.

The plots tour highlighted several ongoing research experiments being conducted at the PTRC including evaluation of novel products for improving nutrient use efficiency of creeping bentgrass on putting greens, determination of drought tolerance of Kentucky bluegrass cultivars, investigation of effects of stressors such as shade and salinity on cold tolerance of putting greens, evaluation of alternative species for sod production, assessment of compost topdressing and compost teas on sports field quality and wear tolerance, investigation of native grass mixtures for use along roadside boulevards, effects of fall nitrogen and potassium applications on annual bluegrass winter hardiness, and alternative weed control strategies for municipal turfgrass stands.

Turf Day was well attended, with 100 people representing several areas of interest in the industry from golf to sports turf to consulting. We were pleasantly surprised to see the attendance double from our first TURF Day event in 2015.

We wanted to thank the industry members: Sports Turf Canada; GreenJacket Turf Covers; BrettYoung; Consolidated Turf; Martin Deerline; Canadian Prairie Chapter Irrigation Association; Living Soil Solutions; JCL Ag Services / Maredo; Wood Bay Turf Technologies; Eagle Lake Landscape Supply; Oakcreek Golf and Turf LP; Western Canada Turfgrass Association; Neudorf; and Bluegrass Sod, who took the time to set up in the tailgate tradeshow area for the opportunity to offer their services, market products, and interact with attendees.

A new addition to the program in 2017, equipment demonstrations provided people with an opportunity to see exciting new tools of the trade. Often trade shows occur in the winter months and indoors, so customers can see the products, but can’t see them in action. Marinus Reincke and Pat Differ from Maredo (www.maredo-bv.com) demoed their PTO driven MT 200 Verticutters and the MT 210 Vibe Spiker unit. The GT 230 Hi Speed Coring heads were set up with solid tines and side eject hollow tines and the GT 410 Bentgrass Overseeding heads allowed for all to see the different patterns. JP Thibault, Mark Rooks, and Garry Bodnar from Martin Deerline (www.martindeerline.com) demoed their Widenmann deep tine aerator and John Deere tractor, and Myles Kraft from Wood Bay Turf Technologies (www.woodbayturftech.com) demoed an fds 9200 turf dethatcher.

The day ended with educational sessions that provided great practical information for turf managers in the province, as well as highly valued CEU credits. We at the PTRC are grateful for the opportunity to interact with turf managers and industry representatives at events like TURF Day, and would like to thank all who participated.
