Agricultural and Heavy Equipment Certificate

If you want to get your hands on the newest and largest industry equipment in service come to Olds College. This comprehensive program will give you a thorough understanding of engines, hydraulics, braking, electrical, starting, charging, fuel systems and more. Our classrooms are discipline specific (i.e. motor lab, machinery lab) with small student to instructor ratio and personal workbenches. With our experienced industry-trained instructors you will receive an education placing you at the forefront of the technical curve.

After program completion, you have the option of writing apprenticeship exams for full technical accreditation towards your specific trade. You will also be well placed to attain Alberta Journeyman Status pending completion of job training hours specified by Alberta Industry Trade Board.

Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate

Olds College’s Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate (HEO) is an Alberta Advanced Education papers approved program. Our comprehensive program is developed with industry to keep up with the demands in the workforce. The mix of classroom theory and practical skills are a balance supported by industry.

Students of this program may be eligible for the $10,000 Alberta-Canada Jobs Grant.

Agricultural Equipment Technician (Apprenticeship)

Combine a rural lifestyle with a technically challenging career working across all the latest agricultural machinery such as GPS precision farming. You will be prepared to repair and overhaul engines, mechanical and power shift transmissions, tractor hydraulic and electrical systems, tillage machinery, and spraying and harvesting equipment.

Landscape Horticulturist (Apprenticeship)

As an Apprentice Landscape Gardener you will be on target for a rewarding career as a Journeyman Landscape Gardener. Blend your learning in the classroom with on the job training. Our accomplished and qualified faculty will show you the skills you need to be a successful professional.

Earn your certificate while working in parks or golf course maintenance, horticulture marketing and nursery or greenhouse production.  Enjoy a hands-on learning experience ranging from botany, operating machinery and basic surveying, irrigation and greenhouse production.

Welder (Apprenticeship)

Welders fabricate and repair in the steel industry and will have the opportunity to work in a shop environment or in remote locations operating a welding rig. Welders join or sever metals in beams, girders, vessels, piping and other metal components used in construction and manufacturing. This program will teach you how to utilize a number of processes including electric arc, mig, tig and gas welding (oxy-acetylene).

Pre-Employment Programs

Heavy Equipment Technician (Pre-Employment)

Heavy Equipment Technicians typically repair and overhaul engines, mechanical and powershift transmissions, hydraulics, and basic electrical systems on mobile and stationary equipment. This program will introduce you to the maintenance of a wide variety of equipment including trucks and trailers, off-road, and earthmoving equipment.

Upon successful completion of the pre-employment program, students who meet the apprenticeship requirements for the trade are eligible to write the first period apprenticeship exam.

Motorcycle Mechanic (Pre-Employment)

Motorcycle enthusiasts have a true passion for the open road and for ensuring their bikes are performing at a top-notch level.

This program prepares students to use industry procedures for entry level assembly, maintenance, repairs, and restoration of motorcycles and multi-wheeled lightweight all-terrain vehicles. Students will get hands-on instruction with an assortment of makes and models as you learn about: two and four stroke engine theory, electrical theory and circuits, mechanical and hydraulic brake systems and wheel and tire maintenance.

Welder (Pre-Employment)

Whether you are looking at entering the workforce, performing basic welding tasks, or creating works of art, this is the place to start! Welders join or sever metals in beams, girders, vessels, piping and other metal components, make metal parts used in construction and manufacturing plants, and weld parts, tools, machines and equipment. Welders typically utilize a number of processes including electric arc, gas welding (oxy-acetylene) and electron beam. This program will introduce you to the skills of the welding trade.

Upon successful completion of the Pre-Employment Welder Program, students who meet the apprenticeship requirements for the trade are eligible to write the First Period apprenticeship exam.
