Getting back too few results?

  • Use a more general term,
    • e.g. flower is more general than rose,
    • fish is more general than trout

Getting back too many results?

  • Click on the “Refine Search” option.
  • Use narrower terms, e.g. rose is narrower than flower
  • Add words, e.g. North American roses
  • Use variations of words rose, roses, Rosa, Rugosa Roses
  • Checking the box next to “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals” will return articles which have been written and reviewed by experts in the field.
  • Enter dates to return articles published within a particular time period.

The Library subscribes to many different article databases in a variety of subject areas, many of which are included in the ‘One Stop Search’.

If you’d like to search further, you may search individual databases by clicking on “Find It” on the Library homepage and then selecting “Article Databases” and choosing one which seems appropriate for your topic.  Each database looks a little different, but searching each is similar to above.
