Employers and temporary workers to benefit from family work permits to address labour shortages Posted January 13, 2023

Spouses of PGWP applicant students can now renew or apply for their Souse Open Work if the PGWP applicant is working, regardless of the student's job classification – skilled or no-skilled work.

According to the law, spouses of students applying for the PGWP could only have their Work Permit renewed/issued if the PGWP holder had been working as a skilled worker. In December 2022, the Minister of Immigration announced a provisional measure eliminating the need to have a job categorized as skilled. Therefore, for 2 years, starting in January 2023, students who are employed at the time of applying for the PGWP, may include spouses in their application, either for the renewal of their work permits or for obtaining it.

It will not be necessary during this period to have a skilled work.
