April 25, 2024

On April 16, 2024, an engaging online panel discussion gathered individuals passionate about advancing Canada's position in agriculture technology commercialization. Hosted by Olds College of Agriculture & Technology and the Regional Innovation Networks (RINs) across Alberta that are supported by Alberta Innovates, a virtual panel on "Investing in Agriculture Technology" drew attention from across the province and beyond, with 65 attendees from a diverse audience eager to explore opportunities in the agricultural sector.

Moderated by James Chepyha, Executive in Residence with Foresight Canada, the panel provided valuable insights into leveraging domain knowledge for wealth generation and capital diversification through investments in early-stage Canadian AgTech ventures. Anthony Bellot, Director of Agribusiness & Agri-Food for ATB Financial, offered an overview of agricultural opportunities and the skills needed for them. Chris Paterson, Venture Partner with Tall Grass Ventures, shared perspectives on AgTech-focused investment. Kendra Donnelly, Chief Financial Officer at Rimrock Cattle Company Ltd., provided first-hand experiences and insights into agricultural innovation.

As the virtual platform session drew to a close, the networking session continued, allowing participants to interact further with the panelists, moderator, and fellow attendees, fostering discussion and connection across diverse stakeholders.

Mark Olson, President of Flokk, an innovative livestock data company, was integral in coordinating this event with Olds College. When asked why this session was so important, Olson highlighted the potential for individuals involved in agriculture to drive innovation and strategic investment.

“Focused on investing in agtech from within the ag sector, facilitating discussions and networking opportunities, this evening advanced the College's mandate to promote innovation in agriculture and technology,” said Lorna Baird, Manager of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Olds College. “This successful event not only shared valuable insights, but also set the stage for future connections and collaborations, echoing the College's commitment to drive progress in the sector.”
