For the Animal Health students of Olds College of Agriculture & Technology, a holistic approach to caring for their four-legged patients is paramount. So, when Pet Planet Canada offered to speak during a Lunch and Learn Presentation, the cohort was more than eager to participate, sparking great conversations around best practices.
The 75 students filling the lecture hall of the Werklund School of Agriculture Technology listened intently as Jeff Pietrobon, Pet Planet Chief Strategy Officer, shared the company’s core values and some of their approaches to addressing animal health, starting with nutrition.
“We believe what you feed your pet should add to their health,” professed Pietrobon, adding, “If I wouldn’t feed an ingredient to a loved one, why would I want to feed it to my pets?”
The vast majority of the presentation centred around nutrition, focusing on points such as breed requirements, and dental and joint health, with Pietrobon leaving plenty of space for students to ask questions about how brand quality is determined, how recalls are dealt with, vendor choices, store standards and how the Pet Planet corporate team in Calgary works with nutritionists and veterinarians to create comprehensive product suites.
“It was incredible to see how engaged our students were throughout the presentation,” said Bronwyn Petersen, Associate Dean, School of Life Sciences. “These connections with industry are an important part of creating opportunities for collaboration and knowledge-sharing.”
Finally, wrapping up the presentation, in support of the next generation of animal healthcare providers, Pet Planet presented a $500 bursary to one student, determined by draw and given to second-year Veterinary Technology student, Josslyn Miller.
The presentation affirmed that the health of our pets is multifaceted, and that the world of pet care and nutrition truly does go hand in hand with overall well-being.
