Thank you to everyone who has reached out to share your concerns. We value the perspectives we have heard over the last few days and appreciate the commitment you have shown to the student experience at Olds College of Agriculture & Technology .
Let me begin by confirming that Olds College remains firmly committed to our Rodeo Program. It is an important part of who we are as an institution — culturally, historically and strategically.
We will continue to support and invest in the future and success of the Olds College Rodeo Program.
We acknowledge the immense dedication our Rodeo Team athletes pour into their sport, and relate to the disappointment following the cancellation of the College’s Spring Rodeo. We have heard your concerns clearly over the last few days, and we truly value the candid feedback and perspectives you have shared with us.
We recognize the significant role the Olds College Rodeo Program has played in shaping the student experience, fostering community, heritage and pride among participants and supporters. The passion and resilience of the rodeo community is truly admirable, and it is one of the reasons we are committed to taking the necessary actions to ensure our program is positioned for long-term success.
To ensure a comprehensive and objective review, Olds College will engage in an independent third-party investigation as part of a thorough review of the decisions and processes surrounding the recent rodeo concerns.
This includes evaluating the College’s organizational structure to determine where adjustments may be necessary. We are committed to fully understanding how this situation unfolded to identify appropriate changes and implement meaningful improvements moving forward.
Animal welfare at Olds College is a shared responsibility by everyone involved, and we want to ensure that Olds College Broncos are a leader in North America for Post-Secondary Rodeo. Specializing in agricultural education and applied research, it is essential that we adhere to strict animal care protocols and student-athlete safety and well-being. We firmly believe that diligent and transparent animal health standards and the safety of our athletes are fundamental to the long-term sustainability of the Rodeo Program.
An immediate review of the rodeo leadership structure is currently in progress. All subsequent changes will be made with the goal of strengthening the program and reinforcing its long-term success while ensuring our commitment to the highest standards of animal care and welfare and participant safety.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Debbie Thompson
