Small Engines, Big Skills

July 24, 2026

Earlier in July, Industry Training & Continuing Education (ITCE) at Olds College of Agriculture & Technology welcomed their inaugural intake of students into the Future Mechanics: Small Engines, Big Skills Summer Youth Program. This was an exciting addition to the available courses that are offered throughout the summer, to students aged 14 to 18 who are aspiring to learn new skills in trades.

Students spent the week becoming “Engine Detectives”, working on small engines found in lawnmowers, trimmers and chainsaws, learning what makes them work - and not work! During the latter part of the week, students dismantled an entire engine and had to put it back together - inspecting every part from the piston rings to the valves. Attempting to start their engines on the last day was the moment-of-truth for these passionate future mechanics.

Whether they had never touched a wrench before, or were already tinkering in the garage at home, this summer program was the perfect way for these students to get hands-on experience developing skills that can be used for years to come.

“It is a privilege to be able to offer unique youth programs like this one to students in our community," says Chris Wharton, Director, ITCE, Olds College. "We see the excitement that these driven future professionals have to learn valuable skills and set themselves up for success on a strong career path.”

For students interested in pursuing Veterinary Medicine, ITCE also has Introduction to Vet Med for Teens and Exploring Vet Med: Large Animals courses available throughout the summer. More details can be found on our website.
