Regional Variety Trials for Prairie Cereals

Regional cereal variety trials evaluate wheat and barley varieties for yield, agronomic performance, disease resistance and adaptability under Alberta growing conditions. The independent field data helps Alberta producers make informed decisions when selecting cereal varieties.

Funders/partners: Alberta grains

Project Overview

  • Evaluating wheat (35) and barley (4) varieties under Alberta growing conditions.
  • Conducting replicated field trials to compare the agronomic performance and adaptability of new and commercially available varieties.
  • Assessing key characteristics including crop establishment, plant height, maturity, lodging resistance, disease, yield and grain quality.
  • Generating independent regional performance data to help producers make informed variety selection decisions.

Project Goals

  • Compare the productivity and agronomic performance of cereal varieties.
  • Evaluate variety adaptation to Alberta growing conditions.
  • Generate reliable data to support producer variety selection and crop breeding programs.
