Olds College of Agriculture & Technology is collaborating with the AIVA Network and GECO Strategic Weed Management to evaluate GECO’s advanced remote sensing and predictive weed mapping technologies on the Olds College Smart Farm.
GECO’s technology maps out and predicts weed patterns and emergence in agricultural fields. This research project focuses on collecting in-field weed data regarding the location, patch size, and species of weeds within Olds College Smart Farm fields. The data collected will enable a comparison between those identified within the field against those identified by GECO.
The experiment will evaluate GECO’s ability to detect weed patches and identify species using satellite imagery, under different combinations of weed-crop-geography.Researchers will scout the target fields at key time periods throughout the growing season for large weed patches, identify the weed species present, weed pressure, and record the weed patch size using high accuracy GNSS equipment. and compare with the weed maps to assess their accuracy.
