Similar to previous years, admission to the game was free and those who were able were encouraged to bring a donation to the Students' Association of Olds College (SAOC) foodbank. All spectators in attendance were given a raffle ticket upon entering the rink, and the Jr.Broncos players who attended and wore their jerseys were given separate tickets. Thanks to generous sponsorships from across the community, 20 prizes were handed out throughout the game, in addition to the $10,000 shoot to win, the four big raffle prizes and a lucky 50/50 ticket winner that went home with $1,010.
The four big raffle prizes included a playstation bundle, an apple technology bundle, an entire pig from McLaughlin Meats and a gift basket with flames tickets. Spectators were encouraged to buy additional raffle tickets from the Olds Christmas Angels for these big ticket items.
To start off the event on the ice, the Olds College Broncos revealed their new “Billy the Bronco” who joined Sparky and Safety Bear on the ice to get the crowd excited. This was followed by Team Fire's grand entrance, which included 10 Broncos women’s hockey players and six members of the fire department. Team Police came out as well featuring six RCMP officers and 10 Broncos players rounding out the roster.
Once the teams were introduced, Deer Meadow student Maggie Kowaliuk sang O’Canada for the bustling crowd of over 600 people! The final step before the game began was to welcome Dr. Debbie Thompson, President & CEO, Olds College of Agriculture & Technology; Jamie Day, Olds RCMP Staff Sergeant; Justin Andrew, Olds Fire Chief; and Dan Daely, Town of Olds Mayor, to the ice alongside Team Police representatives, Olds RCMP Mitch Price and Broncos Captain, Paisley Arntsen, and Team Fire representative, Olds Fire TJ Young and Broncos Assistant Captain, Caybri De Jong, for the ceremonial puck drop.
After last year's loss, Team Police came onto the ice with a vengeance and scored two goals to close out the first period. During the first intermission, the U7 Grizzlys were welcomed to the ice alongside members of the Olds Grizzlys to show off their skills. The littles put on quite the show scoring four points in just five minutes!
Entering the second, Team Fire had the opportunity to close the gap but failed to do so with Team Police scoring two more unanswered goals, allowing Team Police to lead 4-0 going into the final intermission. During this second break, the highly anticipated $10,000 Shoot to Win sponsored by Hildebrandt Motors took place. The contestants randomly selected include Jay Steeves, Mykaela Bauer and Greg Kreese. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, nobody completed the challenging shot on net to win the prize money.
The third period saw Team Fire and Team Police battle it out for 20 more minutes with the hope of a comeback, but Team Police secured the game with one more goal, winning it all 5-0 and completing their goal for revenge from last year.
The night was a huge success, and in total (combined with the charity stop), a grand total of $10,512.50 was raised in support of the Olds Christmas Angels Society.
