Measles — Outbreak Information & Resources

To date, no confirmed cases of measles have been reported at Olds College. Nonetheless, recent cases in Alberta have prompted us to ensure everyone is informed and prepared.

What Is Measles?

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness spread through airborne droplets. Symptoms typically appear 10–12 days after exposure and last about 7–10 days. They include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, small white mouth spots (“Koplik spots”), and a red rash starting at the face and spreading down.

What to Do if You Develop Symptoms

  • Stay home and avoid attending classes or campus events.

  • Call Health Link at 811 before seeking care—tell them you suspect measles exposure and describe any symptoms. Avoid direct visits to clinics or ERs without calling first Alberta Health Services.

Vaccination: Your Best Protection

The MMR vaccine (measles‑mumps‑rubella) is the safest and most effective defence.

Eligibility in Alberta:

  • Free for all children per routine schedule.
  • Adults born in or after 1970 who haven’t had two documented doses—or are uncertain—are eligible for a free MMR shot.

Olds College works with Alberta Health Services to provide seasonal immunizations. While flu shots are offered on site, MMR is only available through public health.

To get vaccinated:

  1. Check your immunization record via Alberta MyHealthRecords or your previous provider.
  2. Call Health Link (811) or visit your local public health centre (for Olds campus, call 403‑559‑2150 to schedule).

Practical Precautions on Campus

  • If symptomatic, wear a surgical mask.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces—measles can survive in the air or on surfaces for several hours.
  • Practice good hand hygiene and minimize close contact.
