Bio

Samuel Gebreselassie is a Research Associate in the Environmental Stewardship Department at OCCI, specializing in water quality management. With over a decade of experience in environmental science – including soil and water science, sustainable land management and irrigation projects – he brings extensive expertise to his role. At Olds College, Samuel focuses on applied research, including developing stormwater management systems, biodiversity enhancement strategies and naturalized water remediation systems. His work integrates native plant species for phytoremediation, providing scalable, sustainable stormwater treatment solutions.

Before joining OCCI, Samuel was a Research Assistant at the University of Regina, studying nutrient management and algal control in irrigation systems. His research involved analyzing soil and water properties, identifying environmentally friendly algal control technologies and assessing environmental compliance strategies. His extensive field and lab work contributed to practical water quality solutions.

Samuel holds a master’s degree in environmental engineering from the University of Regina. He is a Registered Agrologist with the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists and an Environmental Professional In-Training (EPt) with ECO Canada. His dedication to sustainability has earned him recognition for aligning his projects with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
