Olds College of Agriculture & Technology and Rupertsland Institute (RLI) marked a significant expansion of their longstanding partnership during a special event held on campus yesterday. The enhanced collaboration underscores both institutions' shared commitment to providing Métis learners with increased educational opportunities in agriculture and related fields.
The partnership between Olds College and RLI has long served to support Métis students, helping to bridge the gap in access to education and career development. This expansion signals a deeper investment in fostering the next generation of Métis professionals, equipping them with the tools and resources to thrive in the agriculture industry.
As part of the event, two Métis students, Chloe Groves and Mercedes Anderson, were each awarded $2,500 scholarships in recognition of their academic achievements and potential. These awards are in addition to seven other Métis student awards, each valued at $5,000, that will be granted to Olds College students later this year thanks to the Métis Education Foundation. These awards will provide crucial financial assistance, enabling the students to concentrate on their studies and career aspirations.

This expanded partnership reflects the continued success of a relationship that has already made a lasting impact on the lives of Métis learners. Yesterday’s celebration was attended by key figures in the Métis and education communities, including Andrea Sandmaier, President of Otipemisiwak Metis Government; Lisa Savill, Director of Rupertsland Institute; and local Elder Doreen Bergam who joined Olds College’s Vice President of Student Experience, Peter Mal, and Knowledgekeeper Pamela Lashmore to bring greetings and reflect upon the importance of such partnerships for Metis students. Their participation highlights the importance of collaboration in creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for Métis students.
Following the announcement, attendees celebrated with Metis fiddler Alex Kusturok and company and enjoyed a delicious soup and bannock lunch.
Olds College and Rupertsland Institute are excited to continue working together to foster educational opportunities that will benefit Métis learners for years to come. By investing in education today, they are shaping a brighter future for the Métis community and the broader agriculture industry.
