Climbing to New Heights: Empowering Women in Arboriculture

June 26, 2025

Olds College of Agriculture & Technology is excited to welcome participants from across Canada, as the Prairie Chapter Women in the Trees (PCWT) prepares to host the 2025 Women’s Tree Climbing Weekend on campus from June 27 to 29.

The event provides women in arboriculture with a unique opportunity to build technical skills, learn from experienced professionals and connect with others working in the field. The three-day program includes hands-on climbing instruction, educational presentations and networking – delivered in a safe and supportive environment led by female professionals.

Among this year’s participants is Cassidy Friesen, a 2024 graduate of the Arboriculture Technician Certificate program at Olds College. Initially drawn to the College through her interest in landscaping and horticulture, Friesen completed the two-year Horticulture Technologist Diploma before deciding to pursue the four-month Arboriculture program.

“I had time available between seasons and thought it would be a good opportunity to build on what I’d already learned,” said Friesen. “Though I’m not currently working specifically in the arboriculture industry, many aspects of my work relate to both programs. I also found the technical focus throughout the Arboriculture courses helped broaden my practical skill set.”

At Olds College, the Arboriculture Technician Certificate program offers a hands-on approach that focuses on technical tree work, including safe climbing practices, rigging, chainsaw use and ground operations. Students train with industry-standard equipment in real-world scenarios, often outdoors and in trees around campus.

When asked about her most memorable moments in the program, Friesen recalls learning how to ascend and descend on the ropes as one of the highlights of the program.

“Hanging 20 feet in the air by a rope really helped build confidence,” Friesen shares. “You learn to trust yourself and the equipment.”

Friesen was selected by Olds College to attend the Women’s Tree Climbing Weekend based on her performance in the program. As she prepares to participate, she hopes the experience will continue to support her growth and success in the arboriculture industry.
