This certificate delves into the exciting world of technological applications of crop production. The Olds College Smart Ag certificate provides students and graduates with the base knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the evolving ag industry. This certificate will increase competencies in global navigation satellite systems, geographic information systems, precision ag software programs precision ag equipment and autonomous systems.

What will you learn?

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Discuss the advantages of precision farming from an economic and environmental stance using a knowledge of agronomic principles and tools of precision agriculture.
  • Demonstrate the ability to collect, manage, evaluate and apply data to make optimum management decisions.
  • Discuss the various digital technologies that exist in agriculture.
  • Perform calculations necessary in precision agriculture to make informed production decisions.
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of the nature and performance of agricultural information systems to make recommendations to stakeholders.

This course will provide learners with a solid overview of the tools and applications involved in successful precision agriculture. Students will learn to analyze equipment, its various uses and the applications for precision agriculture.  Evaluation of these tools will provide opportunity for discussing economic and environmental benefits and potential drawbacks.  This course will also review the important aspects of agronomy to make informed decisions and maximize the benefits of precision agriculture.


Data Informed Decisions | ATG 7001

Understanding the data and knowing how to apply the knowledge has the potential to increase food production, in a safe efficient and sustainable way.  During this course student will learn how to perform data management analysis, track the importance of maintenance of the equipment, use GIS to create a spatial data structure and study other remote sensing tools and software so they can integrate the information and make solid informed decisions.  


Electronic and Control Systems | ATG 1007

Students will investigate the foundations of control systems, electronics and practical applications in precision farming. Through experiential learning, students will identify and troubleshoot components within hardware devices used in precision farming.

Mathematics is an essential skill to understand precision agriculture.  Both learning the economic side of the business and being able to interpret mathematical data are important when making smart agriculture decisions. Students will engage in the use of mathematical calculations to solve problems and evaluate profitability in precision agriculture.

Variable Rate Prescription Creation and Deployment | ATG 7004

In this course, students will start by exploring the evolution and history of Precision AG. Students will learn how to create VR prescriptions from agronomic data sources and understand the processes of managing data, creating prescriptions and deploying them to farm equipment. Students will be introduced to software and tools that will help manage and understand on farm data management and variable rate technologies. Students will learn how to incorporate existing and new agronomy practices into an On Farm Precision Ag Program.
