Horse Boarding Information

Olds College’s horse boarding services are reserved for Olds College students. Priority is given to those students enrolled in academic programs that require a horse for their program.

Boarding Details

Approved boarders are divided into three specific boarding groups and are listed below in order of priority:

  • Academic

    Programs that require students to board a horse for academic purposes.

    Approved once the student is confirmed by the Olds College Registrar’s Office to be registered in one of these programs. 

  • Rodeo Athletes 

    Approved once the student is confirmed to be on the rodeo team roster and that this student’s boarding will fit in the teams previously determined allocated number of boarders.

  • General

    Olds College students that do not fit into either of the two above mentioned groups. All attempts are made to approve all general boarders but due to available space numbers are limited.

Boarding Details

  • Boarders are required to feed, water and conduct welfare checks on their horse(s) twice daily during specified times.
  • Board fees include pen/shelter rental, feed, bedding and access to an indoor arena during designated times.
  • Boarders are required to supply and feed any supplements or grains they may want to give their horse(s).
  • Boarders are required to keep their pens in a well-maintained state.
  • All farrier and veterinary supplies, services and arrangements are the sole responsibility of the boarder.  
  • All boarders are required to follow the 2026/2027 Vaccine Protocol - information provided at the bottom of this page.  
  • All approved boarders fall into the High-Risk Horses category of the 2026/2027 Vaccine Protocol.
  • Depending on the number of approved applications, horses may be assigned to a dual occupancy outdoor pen. Olds College cannot guarantee that your horse will have its own pen.
  • There may be the opportunity to board more than one horse, but this option is dependent on the number of applicants and therefore is not always available.
  • All horse boarding email communication will be through the student’s Olds College email address.

Fees

  • Board fees are not included in any academic program fees.
  • Board fees include pen / shelter rental, feed, bedding and access to an indoor arena during designated times.
  • For the upcoming 2026/2027 academic year, board rates have been set at $450.00 per month plus GST.
  • Board fees are charged by the academic term.  

Board fees will be applied to the student’s Olds College account.  There are two options to pay these board fees online through the student’s Olds College account:

  • Option 1: Payment in full for the term - four months x $450 = $1,800.00 plus GST
  • Option 2: Select the payment plan option on the student’s online account to set up a monthly payment plan (a service charge will apply). Further details of the payment plan are provided once this choice has been selected.

Facilities and Amenities

  • Olds College facilities include indoor stalls, outdoor pens and two indoor arenas.
  • Indoor stalls are reserved for students enrolled in academic programs that require students to board a horse. 
  • Outdoor pens, single and dual occupancy, are available for all other boarders.
  • Lockers are made available to boarders to store personal items. Olds College is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
  • Stock trailer parking is permitted in designated areas for boarders that have pre-registered their trailer with the Olds College Smart Farm. No overnight camping is permitted unless previous arrangements have been made.

2026-27 Equine Board Intake Process

Commencing in Summer of 2026, Olds College is implementing the following board intake process. This process is focused on continuing to support a safe and fun environment for all equine riders at Olds College.

The board intake process is as follows:

  • Complete the online 2026/2027 Horse Boarding Intake Form and submit it. 
  • Once your 2026/2027 Horse Boarding Intake Form has been received it will then be reviewed to determine eligibility.
  • All submissions will receive a follow up email notifying them whether or not they have been approved for horse boarding at Olds College.  
  • If approved, further instructions will be provided in a follow up email.  
  • For those submissions that are not approved a follow up email will provide details outlining the reason for being declined.

Vaccine Protocol

The Olds College Vaccine Protocol is strictly enforced to ensure the safety of all horses that at Olds College.

  • Olds College has biosecurity protocols in place to maintain the health and safety of all horses on Olds College campus. Proof of current vaccinations is required prior to the horse’s arrival on campus.

    High-Risk Horses

    Horses staying on campus for more than three days consecutively that have close contact with other horse groups and/or are frequently hauled on and off campus to outside facilities. 

    Close contact includes: 

    • Nose-to-nose interaction 
    • Shared pens, stalls, arenas or turnout 
    • Shared water sources or feeding areas 

    These horses present the highest risk for infectious disease transmission. 

    Vaccines 

    The following vaccines are required for all high-risk horses: 

    • Tetanus - current within 12 months  
    • Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE) - current within 12 months  
    • Western Equine Encephalomyelitis (WEE) - current within 12 months  
    • Equine Influenza (Flu) - current within four months 
    • Equine Herpesvirus (Rhino) - current within four months 
    • Strangles - current within 12 months The following vaccines are recommended for all high-risk horses: 
    • West Nile Virus (WNV) - current within 12 months 

    Owners are encouraged to consult with their veterinarian regarding appropriate booster schedules.

    Examples of high-risk horses: 

    • All boarded horses 
    • Rodeo team haul-ins 
    • ECM riding elective haul-ins

    Approved Documents:

    A copy of the receipt, invoice or certificate that shows the required vaccine(s) were purchased. This documentation must also state the owner's name, horse's name and date of purchase.

     

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, only Olds College students are approved to board a horse on campus.
  • For the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year, board rates have been set at $450/month plus G.S.T., and fees are required to be paid in advance for the full term (four months payment for each term).

  • Board rates include pen / shelter rental, feed, bedding, access to the arena during designated times. However, boarders will be required to feed and water their own horses, and keep their pens in a well maintained state.
  • Reservations are not offered at this time. Academic programming is given first priority for boarding. Should your program require you to board a horse you will automatically be approved once you have submitted adequate documentation ensuring your horse is in compliance with the Olds College Vaccine Protocols.

  • Once you have been approved to board at Olds College, you will receive details in regards to arrival dates and times as well as other boarding related information.

  • Boarding fees are not included in program fees.

  • Grain and supplements are not included in boarding fees and are the responsibility of the owner to purchase and feed.

  • At this time, only boarders registered in a program that requires them to board a horse at Olds College are assigned to an inside stall, all other boarders are assigned to outdoor pens.

  • Depending on the number of approved applications, horses may be assigned to a dual occupancy outdoor pen. We cannot guarantee that your horse will have its own pen.

  • There may be the opportunity to board more than one horse but this option is dependent on the number of applicants and therefore is not always available.

  • At this time there are designated open riding times available week nights and on weekends. Monthly schedules are provided to boarders in advance of the upcoming month.

  • All farrier and veterinary services are the full responsibility of the owner. Olds College does not offer, arrange or cover the costs associated with either of these services.
