Olds College is Pleased to Offer its First Purebred Red Angus Bulls for Sale

May 08, 2023

May 8, 2023, Olds, Alberta: Olds College of Agriculture & Technology is pleased to be offering the first purebred Red Angus cattle for private sale since the initial donation of the Red Angus herd in 2020. The College has three Red Angus herd bull prospects ready to be sold to the public.

The purebred herd is managed on campus by the College’s Technology Access Centre for Livestock Production (TACLP), and students at the College largely benefit from having the herd on campus. Students analyze data from the herd in the classroom, and the student-led show team and judging club at Olds College has extended the classroom learning by exhibiting the cattle at livestock shows across Alberta.

“We’re very grateful to have a Red Angus purebred herd at Olds College, and excited to offer the first three herd sire prospects resulting from the initial donation,” comments Sean Thompson, Manager, TACLP. “The Red Angus herd provides the TACLP unique opportunities for applied research activities involving purebred cattle, and we are thrilled that students are continuously involved in the herd activities through classes and student club participation.”

The College’s purebred Red Angus herd has grown to 20 breeding females. Olds College initially received 10 Red Angus heifer calves as a donation from the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society in October 2020. In fall 2021, Olds College purchased two bred Red Angus heifers and two heifer calves at the Canadian Red Round-Up Show and Sale. In addition to the heifers and calves purchased by Olds College, Bryan Mackenzie and First Class Cattle Marketing generously donated a third bred female to the College at the same time.

Leila Hickman, Livestock Instructor at Werklund School of Agriculture Technology (WSAT), leads the classroom and student learning, and student club and cattle show activities.

“It’s exciting to be marketing our first purebred animals to industry from the College,” says Hickman. “Watching the students learn about the genetics and performance of the herd in the classroom, and seeing them show the cattle through the student clubs is so beneficial to their hands-on learning experience at the College.”

Olds College would like to sincerely thank the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society for the initial donation of 10 Red Angus heifer calves, as well as Bryan Mackenzie of Brylor Ranch and Darnell Fornwald on behalf of First Class Cattle Marketing for their Red Angus cattle donation to the College.
