Olds College Celebrates 110th Graduating Class

June 09, 2025

Saturday, June 7, 2025 honoured the 110th graduating class of Olds College. The day, filled with applause, laughter and celebration, saw nearly 2,000 guests join us in the Ralph Klein Centre, and countless others online – around the world – to watch as 650 students crossed the stage, signifying the completion of their program and earning their credentials. The Class of 2025 marks the largest graduating class in Olds College history, with an impressive 1277 students eligible to graduate.

This momentous day also honoured the installation of Dr. Debbie Thompson as the 15th and first female president of Olds College, along with presentations to bestow an honorary degree posthumously on Jack Anderson, accepted by his daughter, Wynne Chisholm, and the Presidential Instructional Excellence Award given to Horticulture Instructor, Wendy Daley.

Among the graduates were students from our Edmonton Cohort, marking the graduation of our very first class from the two-year Business Management Diploma program in Edmonton. The moment was made even more special as several cohort members were bussed in to cross the stage alongside their fellow Olds College graduates. In addition, we also saw 130 dual credit students earn their Veterinary Technical Assistant certificate this year — all while still in high school.

Starting with the Indigenous Honour song, played by members of the Siksika Nation, and ending with a performance by Métis fiddler, Billy Joseph, the ceremonies also included Alumni Association Awards, Olds College Faculty Association Awards, and the Governor General Award given to Olds College Bronco and graduate of the Business Management program, Simon Puddicome.

Each ceremony was “capped off” with a traditional hat toss and ecstatic cheers celebrating the Class of 2025.

J.C. (Jack) Anderson Awarded the 2025 Olds College Honourary Degree

As a long time friend and significant donor to Olds College, J.C. (Jack) Anderson, was awarded the Olds College Honorary Degree posthumously on June 7, 2025 at convocation. His daughter, Wynne Chisholm, accepted on his behalf.

Jack, known for his business acumen and passion for cattle ranching and automobiles, was just as well known for his profoundly charitable nature. It was this philanthropic spirit that allowed him to leave a lasting legacy in Alberta's education landscape. Olds College, in particular, has been the beneficiary of his remarkable generosity.

We had the privilege of informing Jack about his honorary degree before his passing on April 19, 2025, and he was deeply moved by the recognition.

2025 Governor General’s Academic Medal – Collegiate Bronze

Congratulations, Simon Puddicombe.

Olds College is proud to announce that Simon Puddicombe, a graduate of the Business Administration – Sports Management diploma program and a dedicated student-athlete with the Olds College Broncos Soccer and Futsal teams, has been named the recipient of the prestigious Governor General’s Academic Medal – Collegiate Bronze. This national award recognizes the student graduating from a diploma-level program with the highest academic standing, and Simon’s commitment to excellence both in the classroom and on the field has earned him this remarkable honour.

Reflecting on the moment he received the news, Puddicombe shared, “I was initially surprised as I didn’t realize there was such an award for diploma-level courses, but I felt very honoured and thankful.”

Puddicombe attributes his academic success to consistently putting in 100 per cent effort, regardless of the course or assignment. “I always wanted to provide my best work,” he said, adding that something as simple as regularly attending classes played a critical role in building a strong academic foundation. He also highlighted the influence of instructors Kurt Spady and Desmond Bouteiller, who made course material relevant and inspiring. “They made my occupational goals feel like a realistic possibility if I was willing to work for it.”

In addition to his academic success, Puddicombe was a key member of the Broncos soccer and futsal teams. “Being part of the Broncos was the best part of my college experience,” he noted. “Playing the sport I love at a competitive level with like-minded athletes was all I could ask for.” His most memorable moment came in 2024, when the team captured a bronze medal at the ACAC Futsal Championships. “To help contribute to our most successful year as a rookie was amazing.”

Balancing academics and athletics required discipline and time management, skills Puddicombe embraced fully. He also credits the structure of the team schedule and the pursuit of physical health for sharpening his mental focus and drive in the classroom.

Looking ahead, Puddicombe will continue his studies at The King’s University, where he plans to complete a Bachelor of Commerce degree and continue playing collegiate soccer and futsal.

Congratulations to Simon on this well-deserved recognition. He is a shining example of the values, determination and excellence that define Olds College students.

Congratulations to the Class of 2025!
