Olds College Celebrates Student Success in Dual Credit Programming

July 07, 2025

Olds College of Agriculture & Technology is proud to congratulate this year’s dual credit students on successfully completing their courses and programs — all while still in high school!

This year, a total of 164 students have officially completed and are eligible to graduate from one of Olds College’s dual credit certification programs. This includes 131 students in the Veterinary Technical Assistant (VTA) certificate program, 30 students from the Pre-Employment Trades programs — who are now eligible to write the Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) exam and, if successful, will be credited with a year of post-secondary training — and an additional three students from the Meat Processing certificate program.

In addition to our dual credit certificate programs, we offer 36 unique single online and in person courses from 13 programs to high school students from across Alberta. In the 2024-25 school year, we had 1,078 individual students experience an Olds College course or certificate program.

“We are so proud of all our students who have balanced high school, personal commitments and post-secondary coursework,” said Jackie Taylor, Executive Director, Central Alberta Collegiate Institute & the Community Learning Campus.

“Their dedication demonstrates the incredible opportunities that dual credit programming offers Alberta’s youth. Dual credit learning is an exceptional experience for high school learners that provides them with career exploration and post-secondary preparation, all while still supported by the amazing staff at the high schools. Dual credit is transformational for youth, causing them to successfully transition to their career training after high school.”

What is dual credit programming?

Dual credit programming allows Alberta high school students in Grades 10 to 12 to take post-secondary courses or complete single courses or certificate programs while still enrolled in high school. These programs are a collaborative effort between Alberta Education, school authorities and post-secondary institutions like Olds College.

Olds College is now partnered with 63 school authorities to deliver a wide range of dual credit opportunities — from individual courses to full certification programs. Olds College is also a partner in the Central Alberta Collegiate Institute, delivering dual credit programming to students from Chinook’s Edge School Division, Red Deer Public Schools, Wolf Creek Public Schools and Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools. Dual credit not only supports career exploration, but also provides a head start on post-secondary education, helping students make more informed decisions about their futures.

Watch the video below to hear what recent dual credit students and instructors have to say about the program.

A huge congratulations to all our dual credit students. It’s truly remarkable that some convocated from a post-secondary institution at the same time as graduating from high school. We look forward to connecting with those students who wish to continue on with their career training at Olds College as an adult learner after high school.

Interested in Dual Credit programming? Here’s how to get started:

To apply for an Olds College dual credit course, students must contact the school authority where they are enrolled. Olds College does not manage the student selection for dual credit and only works directly with the assigned school authority contacts.

Each school authority is fully responsible for the students they select to participate in dual credit and they manage their own student selection process. As a post-secondary partner, Olds College works directly with these school authority contacts to support their student enrolment.
