The Technology Access Centre for Livestock Production (TACLP) team at Olds College is evaluating the effectiveness of virtual fence collars for cattle.
According to the manufacturer, eShepherd is a solar-powered, GPS-enabled, livestock neckband that helps producers draw a virtual fence. Gallagher, the company behind eShepherd, says cattle learn to move and remain within the virtual barrier.
The TACLP team will compare virtual fencing to conventional electric fencing. This virtual fencing study is part of a larger project on rotational grazing and pasture management.
